New Year location: Edhsgården, Back, Kall, Åre, Sweden. A guesthouse run by friends.

To do: Drive 40 km to Sweden’s best ski resort for some high level fun, great skiing, fancy shopping and serious party. Or just ask the neighbour to take you on a scooter trip or do some cross country skiing in this remote area. Hand a big check to the host and maybe he teach you to drive the pist machine in Edhsgården’s own (closed at the moment) alpine slopes. In springtime it is wonderful to fish an still icey lake in just t-shirt and get tanned. If you just wanna relax sit by the fire in the downstairs lounge (and local pub for the souls in the traditional timber houses in tiny Back) or take a proper sauna with snowbath. If you are in for a more fierce treat book a test drive of luxury cars on ice or hillside.

To eat: The local food is highly recommended and has a solid reputation since Åre is a culinary hotspot. Fine dining in the town or countryside, here you find some of Sweden’s most talented and famous chefs. Edhsgården’s host Joe invited us to a dinner with delisious fried öring, caught in a small lake close by, on the menu. The next village Kall houses the fine dining restaurant The Local where of course locally sourced products is used in the kitchen. You find the restaurant at Kall auto lodge, hotel and test center for Porsche.
In the area you also, according to White guide and other food critics, find “one of the world’s most interesting” restaurants – Fäviken Magasinet. Chef Magnus Nilsson had just published a fashionable cookbook about his nose to tail- and season food philosophy. The restaurants ingredients are farmed and hunted in the immediate vicinity.

White Guide has listed the best restaurants around the Swedish ski capital Åre.

To get here: Fly in to Östersund airport (Frösön) or take the night train straight from Malmö (south Sweden) or Stockholm to Kall or Åre (close to several nice hotels; Diplomat – traditional and central, Fjällgården – beautiful, ski in possible and best afterski, Copperhill – luxury, Tott – family and kids). We drove from Stockholm, hard but it is great to have a car for transportation if you stay outside the city center.

Best Holiday advice: Tott afterski is for families and middle aged couples with a fling for singersongwriter-music. Dahlboms on the square is like any bar after skiing. Fjällgården at station Bergbanan is the best. And, now it starts. Happy new year!

Start: 3.30 pm . But you need to start queing if you are not VIP.
End: 5 pm. Don’t drink so much you can’t find your way down the last pist, it is to hard to walk.

The word is travelling fast mouth to mouth: An avalanch has broken. In Åre. I hear it from the girl behind. Minutes later my mother in law call and has heared it on the news.
